The Dunedin Club

The Club was built for a pioneer; the members continue to build on that pioneering spirit through friendship, enjoyment and appreciation of the Fernhill homestead as their own.

The Dunedin Club offers an exclusive environment where elegance and tradition blend seamlessly with an understanding of modern expectations.

Whether it's for a Member, a guest celebrating an important occasion, a business person hosting a meeting or for a bride-to-be, the Dunedin Club will always have something special to offer.

The Dunedin Club

Discover our
History

The Dunedin Club has a distinguished history which stretches back to the pioneers of the 1850s. In 1848 the two settler ships John Wickliffe and Philip Laing berthed at Dunedin, bringing Otago's first European migrants. Ten years later, a group of entrepreneurs founded The Dunedin Club in rented premises in Maclaggan Street.

The premises which the club occupies today were built by the colourful whaler, run holder and businessman John (Johnny) Jones in 1867. In 1874 the Club purchased Jones's Fernhill property.

This historically significant building is a dignified example of mid-Victorian colonial architecture, set in spacious, landscaped grounds.

The Dining, Reading and Ritchie Rooms are home to the Club’s most formal meals. The Dining Room has a mid-Victorian décor and a conservatory with windows overlooking the garden and fountain, providing plenty of natural daylight.
Despite its name, The Reading Room is now a place to enjoy private functions or smaller lunches seating around 30 guests. The windows overlook the garden and fountain and showcase the Club’s well-maintained grounds.
The Ritchie Room, named after the Ritchie family who have dedicated much time and generosity to the Club, is the smallest of our three dining rooms. It is the perfect space for holding smaller dinners of up to 15 guests, or meetings and other business-related functions.

RWM Greenslade
Room

R W M Greenslade Room, also known as both the Bar and Card Room, is located near the rear of the Club and opens up to the lovely terrace and garden where members can enjoy a drink or meal underneath our well-established chestnut and camphor trees.

The warm and timeless décor is ideal for enjoying an aged whisky or a pint of Emerson’s in your own engraved pewter. Choose a table by the fireplace and order something delicious from our traditional Friday night grill or bar menu.
